Women Founder's Business Life Cycle

Wondering where you fit on your entrepreneurial journey? Are you wondering what factors play into your future success? Pondering what key differentiators between what women entrepreneurs seek has to do with it? Come join the MalamaDoe- A Coworking Community for Women in Shorewood’s Sheila Long as we discuss this topic in depth.

After launching MalamaDoe - A Coworking Community for Women, it became apparent that not all women business owners needed a space to work or meet clients for meetings. However, they were seeking a trusted network of women entrepreneurs. MalamaDoe's founder, Sheila Long, interviewed over 40 business women about where they were at in their quest for work place flexibility. Based on her findings, she created theWomen Business Life Cycle.

The Business Creation Life Cycle segments the stages of a business being created from Discovery, to Business Planning, to Growth, to Running a Business to Focused Fulfillment. The Life Cycle identifies the different facets involved in the journey of each segment. These Life Cycle facets range from the founder’s knowledge of their Elevator Pitch, Service Offering and Professional Network to key areas of her Business Funding, Actual Sales, and the Emotional State. In the Business Creation Life Cycle, the Pain points for each stage are clarified.

50+ New Start ™ refers to individuals who make a choice to step away from their current career and yet are not ready to stop working. Many of these individuals choose to continue working in a career and often choose to build their own business as the next career.

Many of these individuals choose to now work under their own direction and for their own reasons and purposes.

This session will address such questions as:

  •  What are the reasons people step away and go into business for themselves or choose, when they have reached retirement age, to continue to work
  • What are the typical directions that they choose?
  • What is the best way to approach such a decision?
  • What are the essential steps to take to improve the likelihood of success as they move forward in their thinking and their actions?
After a presentation on the topic, there will be an interactive discussion and Q&A among the participants.

THE CHALLENGESAt Reverse Pitch MKE on November 6, 2018 innovation leaders from Northwestern Mutual will share detailed information to teams interested in pitching Northwestern Mutual for funding. A high-level overview of the challenge statements that will be presented at Reverse Pitch MKE follow:

Current challenges include redundant data, records out of sequence, and lack of association between related topics.

Pop Up Wellness Center and FREE Reiki

Come and unwind from your hectic day as Wings of Fire Consulting transforms the Michigan Room at Gateway Technical College's Racine Campus into a Wellness Center. Enjoy the serene atmosphere of relaxing music and aromatherapy while you take the opportunity to try some self-care tools. Take a moment of quiet in our made-for-adults blanket fort. Learn some tips and tricks to keep yourself balanced as you embark on your entrepreneurial journey.

FREE 15 minute Reiki sessions will be offered as well by a certified Reiki Practitioner!

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by laying of hands lightly on participants. It is based on the idea that an unseen energy flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's energy is low or blocked, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high and moving, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The mind exists not only in the brain, but also through-out the body. The nervous system extends to every organ and tissue in the body. Our negative thoughts are not just in the brain, but also collect in various locations through-out the body. If the negative thoughts and feelings are not eliminated, illness may result.
A Reiki practitioner will help move the negative thoughts and feelings through your body in a this non-invasive, healing technique. A massage therapist moves energy through manual release of tension. Reiki uses the mind and body to find the same relief. It is a partnership between practitioner and participant to help take control of thoughts and feelings, moving toward a better life. Participants may feel a release of tension and pain, leaving with a feeling of lightness and relief.

Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: The Role of Schools in Northeast Wisconsin

Entrepreneurial ecosystems are defined as a set of interdependent actors and factors coordinated in such a way that they enable productive entrepreneurship within a particular territory (Stam and Spigel, 2017). Like many other regions around the United States, Northeast Wisconsin wants to improve employment trends and develop policies geared toward a prosperous economy (Ward & Winters, 2004). The region believes that the model for future economic prosperity changed—the region must adopt a new model that builds a more robust entrepreneurial ecosystem (Ward & Winters, 2004). This strategy serves as a catalyst for the development of several public and private entities and efforts that share a mission of supporting entrepreneurs. A primary focus of these entities and efforts is to develop an entrepreneurial ecosystem with a number of different economic clusters. This economic cluster strategy receives growing attention in the region via startup accelerators, pitch contests, education initiatives, networking events, workshops, and conferences.

Schools also play a significant role in providing basic and specialized education for our future entrepreneurs. In this vein, this session uses the WorldCafé, a participative method, to explore what role schools play in helping to build Northeast Wisconsin’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The World Café is a creative process for facilitating collaborative dialogue and the sharing of knowledge and ideas to create a living network of conversation and action. In this process a café ambiance is created, in which participants discuss a question or issue in small groups around the café tables.Using large sheets of paper on each table, they capture their thoughts and ideas around topics and questions posted at each table. At regular intervals the participants move to a new table. A table host provides context and summarizes the previous conversation to the new table guests. Thus the proceeding conversations are cross-pollenized with the ideas generated in former conversations with other participants. At the end of the process the main ideas are summarized in a plenary session and follow-up possibilities are discussed. A very useful method is to have participants collaborate in creating a context map from the most important thoughts and ideas.

Hatch: Chippewa Valley Regional Finals

Hatch is a community-based startup pitch platform to help develop “napkin” ideas into early-stage companies

The rules are simple. At the Hatch finale, all regional semi-finalists will have five minutes to pitch in front of judges and a live audience for the chance to win the grand prize of $5,000 and other business services for the most articulated and furthered business idea. The audience has a chance to evaluate and vote for their favorite idea alongside the judges. There may also be one or two wildcard slots for presenters that have furthered their business idea.

Beyond the prize money, this is their chance to get the business idea that has been rattling around in their head, out in front of supportive investors, businesses, and community members. Hatch events are fun, highly social and inspirational.

Cost: Free and open to the public!

Who Should Come: Entrepreneurs, creatives, business professionals, organizers, and investors

Failure Friday Open Mic

This is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to share and celebrate the failures of their endeavors. Wait, did you say celebrate failure?! Yes, we did!

While failure is a sensitive topic -- and one that often comes with feelings of discomfort, shame and even regret -- failure is a necessary phase in the journey of success. You cannot achieve the true heights of success without having experienced the true depths of failure. Our failures should be shared...and yes, even celebrated...because a celebration of failure is the same as a celebration of getting one step closer to success.

We will use the open mic format, meaning that if you want to share your story, all you have to do is sign up at the event.

The rules are simple:

  • Each speaker will have about 5 minutes to share their story of failure.

  • In your storytelling, focus on the project or endeavor and the way you felt before failing, rather than what happened after the failure or what you learned from failing.

  • There will be time for open conversation after everyone has shared, which is when you can talk with others about what was gained from the failures shared on stage.

  • Be respectful of everyone’s story. It is a safe environment for sharing sensitive and personal reflections. Disrespect will not be tolerated, but applause for each story is encouraged. After all, it’s a celebration!

We’ll have the hilarious folks from Clear Water Comedy on hand to help us celebrate failure!

This event is brought to you by You Are Here LLC,  Clear Water Comedy and The Plus.
